✩ Using a comb helps nail the cut: Cutting hair with a comb allows for zero elevation, explains Richard — which creates minimum graduation. (He also taps around the ears to allow for natural movement and elevation; the key to maintaining a square, clean baseline.)
✩ The right brush helps, too: Richard does a full blowout using a classic Denman brush, because it provides the tension necessary for a super-smooth, even finish – a finish that enables him to go back and check/finalize the haircut’s shape.
✩ It can be tweaked for clients with thick hair: While bobs are great on most hair types, thick/coarse-haired clients may need some finessing. “The underneath area around the back can be graduated shorter for these clients. This will reduce much of the thickness and bulk around the occipital area.”
