Want to add a very special twist to wedding-day hair? Try this utterly romantic “Ivy Braid,” created by Joico Brand Educator, Vanessa Drozda. Yes, it’s gorgeous. And yes, it’s got all that yummy back-drama for a walk down the aisle. But it’s also got a beautiful secret message “woven” in, thanks to a delicate accessory that winds its way down the braid.

“My inspiration behind this look comes from the ivy plant and the meaning behind it,” explains Vanessa. “Ivy, the climbing evergreen plant, represents eternity and fidelity. In ancient Greece, newlyweds wore ivy wreaths to show their loyalty and devotion to one another.” In a nod to history – and to love – Vanessa fashioned a double-braid look (part traditional braid/part fishtail) and graced it with a delicate crystal-and-pearl-studded trail; the accessory drapes itself like ivy throughout the hairstyle. Here’s one to try.

Want to create the Ivy Vine Braid? Start with these pro tips…

Always do a trial run in the salon:

This wards off any unhappy surprises on the big day.

Wash that hair:

“Proper hair prep is super important to creating a long-lasting style for the wedding day. One of the biggest misconceptions for styling hair is that the hair should be dirty. I recommend clean hair, freshly washed within 24 hours of styling.”

Try this when you can’t decide between wearing hair up or down:

“This braid technique works great for brides who have difficulty deciding whether to wear their hair up or down for the big event. They want their hair off their face and to hold the style, but they don’t want to do a traditional bun or updo. The Ivy braid delivers a hybrid of the updo hold, with a bit of a hair-down look.” (Bonus: No worries about hair drooping or frizzing throughout the day.)

The step-by-steps…

long braid updo with hair piece

1. Apply Power Whip to wet hair and blow out.

2. Section off a bottom row of hair and spray mids to ends with Heat Hero. Use a curling wand and wrap 1 ½-inch section vertically throughout the row.

3. If the hair is still a little “soft,” set the finished row of curls with Power Spray — and continue this process throughout the set.

4. Tease the crown of the hair and pull it into a ponytail using a clear elastic band.

5. Take 1 ½-inch section of the top right side of the hair, and wrap into a two strand twist.

6. Pull twist across the crown ponytail and secure with a bobby pin on the left side.

7. Repeat this technique on the left side, going back and forth adding new sections on each side of the hair until you reach the bottom of the hairline.

8. When you reach the neckline, use a bungee rubber band to secure into a loose ponytail.

9. Fishtail-braid the ponytail and finish with a clear elastic. Fan out the braid using the pancake pinch-and-pull method.

10. Spray with JoiMist Firm to lock in the style. If you have flyaway hairs, roll the side of the can over those strands to settle them while the spray is still wet.

11. Add the hair vine, securing with silver silver bobby pins to match the wire.

12. Time to walk down the aisle!
