The backstory…

“My client wanted to be blonde with no dimension,” explains Mai. “She had grown-out highlights and some of her hair had been compromised previously. I knew she was the perfect candidate for a bleach-and-tone. And I also knew I would be able to accomplish it with minimal-to-no damage to her hair.”

Mai explains the beauty of blonde…

Her tips and tricks…

Consultation is key:“You have to assess the integrity of the hair and have an in-depth discussion with your client.”

Don’t cut corners:“Never skip a step. As you’re moving through the hair, take the thinnest subsections possible.”

Go low:“Start with a low developer and do not use external heat. When toning, trust the process and take your time.”

Be honest about maintenance:“This look works for clients who are okay with a high-maintenance color; and who are willing to make sacrifices to maintain the color. Like:

They’re okay with not going into the pool or ocean unless they have hair protection.
They’re willing to avoid excessive heat styling.
They’re on board with coming into the salon at least every five weeks for a touch-up.
