Featuring Joico Global Brand Storyteller, Olivia Smalley

Scored a few invites this year and need hair that rises to the sparkling occasion? Try these quick-and-easy looks from Joico Global Brand Storyteller, Olivia Smalley: She’s created three gorgeous styles that you can pull off yourself in mere minutes!

LOOK #1: UP, UP, AND AWAY!

“Imagine that you’re getting ready with your bestie for a swanky holiday bash — and suddenly, you look into the mirror you realize you’re not having a good hair day,” says OIivia, who’s got an instant solution: a half-up ponytail inspired by celeb pop singers. “This fall/winter season, we’re loving a high and tight half-up pony, and we’ve seen a whole host of celebs rocking this look as well. I love it for its simplicity and versatility,” she explains.

Who can wear it: “This look is great for all hair types – even a head of beautifully textured curls. It doesn’t matter if you’re a hairstylist or not; everyone should try this look because it’s completely fool proof!

The pro secret: “My tip is inspired by the hair pros that work New York Fashion Week. We’ve all encountered the scenario where a scrunchie is either too big or too small for your pony; so instead of using a regular hair tie, you’re going to reach for elastic string. This allows you to customize the length according to your specific needs.

THE STEP-BY-STEPS
1. Prep hair with Joico Zero Heat.

2. Section out a few pieces to frame your face.

3. Starting at the tip of your ears, section your hair into a half-up, high pony. Smooth out any bumps or flyaways.

4. Using your cut piece of elastic, wrap it around the top section as many times as necessary, until it feels secure; then tie it off.

5. Finish of hair with KPAK Color Therapy Luster Lock Glossing Oil for a shiny, smooth finish.

LOOK #2: MAKING WAVES

female model

“This quick-and-easy style is for the woman who does it all. She works, she cooks, she cleans, AND she throws parties! Just like the rest of us, she has so much on her plate and sometimes runs behind…that’s when this style comes in handy,” raves Olivia, who claims the speedy look only requires working on three sections. “We are absolutely loving this look for fall. These waves are so fabulous and versatile, you’ll be rocking them with everything from cocktail party clothes to oversized sweaters!”

Who can wear it: “My favorite part about this technique is the simplicity and the longevity. This look is so easy for hairstylists and clients alike and looks great on everyone. I also love the way the style lasts into days two and three.” Inspired by the timeless “wet” looks sported on the red carpet by Hollywood’s hottest, this wavy wonder is easy-peasy.

The pro secret: “The biggest trick to achieving the wet look is dirty hair,” says Olivia. “That’s right, the dirtier the better! The other thing you will need to get this look is a glossing product and de-frizzer.” (More on these, below.)

THE STEP-BY-STEPS
1. Prep hair with Joico Heat Hero.

2. Section hair into 3 sections and use the BaByliss Waver to create quick beachy waves.

3. Apply a generous amount of Colorful Glow Beyond Glossing Oil to create that sexy wet look.

4. Finish with Defy Damage Invincible Frizz Fighting Bond Protector for added shine and smoothness.

LOOK #3: STYLE ON THE SIDE, PLEASE

“The holidays are here and you know what that means…holiday office parties! Only, your workday went by so quickly, and now you realize you’re going to be late, with no time to do your hair,” says Olivia. “This hair hack will have you looking gorgeous, so you can get out the door in minutes.”

Who can wear it: This hack is for the girl who is always on the go. My clients are always asking me for quick ways to do their hair; and no matter what the situation, this style will save you time and make you look fabulous. Plus, this look will never go out of style!”

The pro secret: It’s all about how you handle the ends of the hair at the bottom of the braid, according to Olivia. “After you secure your braid in an elastic, grab a second elastic and roll those ends into a bun. This rounded edge will make it easier to blend into the bun without poking through. Additionally, you will need to use Rise Up for volume and texture! Your hair won’t get volume or fluff right without it.”

THE STEP-BY-STEPS
1.
Spray roots with Joico Rise Up for volume.

2. Section out some face framing tendrils, and gather all the rest of your hair to one side.

3. Create a three-strand braid at the nape of your neck and secure with an elastic (Hack: When you get to the end of your braid, roll and tuck the ends into a bun shape instead of leaving them poking out.)

4. Apply Rise Up to the braid, and gently pull on the sides of the braid for volume.

5. Starting at the end of the braid, roll the ends up into a bun and secure with bobby pins.
6. Finish of the look with JoiMist Medium for hold.
