Featuring Joico Brand Storyteller, Olivia Thompson

You’re going to fall in love with this old-school tool and technique from Joico Brand Storyteller, Olivia Thompson – she uses hot rollers (or should we say, heart rollers) to create a look that’s deeply romantic, lusciously curly, healthy, and super easy to copy. Begin swooning, here:

“The inspiration behind this Valentine’s Day look is a modern twist on classic bombshell hair. The goal is to create a romantic and glamorous style that enhances the allure of date night,” says Olivia.

What brings this retro look into 2024…

“It combines the charm of old-school hot rollers with the advanced thermal protection and split-end-mending properties of Joico’s Heat Hero.” Which means…you get the bounce and drama of a traditional curling tool, with all the safety and technology to keep hair healthy.

Here’s what you need (and why)…

Defy Damage Shampoo, Conditioner, and KBOND20 Power Masque:

“For bond-building and protection, I always deep-treat hair with my favorite KBOND20 before I do a heat style,” says Olivia.

Hot rollers:

Our pro turns to this tried-and-tested method because it delivers longevity to her curls while adding extra volume.

Heat Hero:

A quick spray all over the hair gives Olivia heat protection up to 450 degrees. She likes to apply it before, during, and after curling hair for extra protection and hold.

These keep sections tangle-free and smooth as you wind hair into the hot rollers.

Olivia’s DIY tips…

  • Don’t forget the prep: Always begin with clean, dry hair. (Unlike other curl styles, this look aims for a smooth, shiny finish.) After applying Heat Hero, be sure the product is evenly distributed by brushing it through the hair.
  • Here’s the rolling technique: Olivia sections her hair, then adds hot rollers, beginning at the bottom of the hair and working her way up. For that classic bombshell effect, she makes sure to roll each section AWAY from the face.
  • Don’t skip the complete cool-down: Unlike a curling iron, hot rollers need time to set your wave. “This is crucial for setting the curl and ensuring they last longer. I like to leave them in at least 20 minutes,” says Olivia. (Perfect time for doing romantic makeup.)
  • Finish with more Heat Hero: “This not only protects from split ends,” she says,” but adds a luxurious shine and a hold-level 3, which is great for flyaways.”
  • Gently separate the waves: Use your fingers –gingerly, please – for a soft, voluminous finish. “The goal is to not disturb that romantic wave pattern.”
