Curls That Last: 5 Hacks

WITH JOICO GLOBAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, RICHARD MANNAH

Tired of styling your hair into gorgeous waves or curls, only to have them fall flat an hour later? Joico Global Artistic Director, Richard Mannah, is about to give you (or them) a lift, with five smart hacks he uses on his own clients every single day.

Trick #1: Heat protector (it’s not just for heat)“You can help maintain curls you’ve created with a hot tool by adding a thermal styler, like Heat Hero, first. This will help preserve and seal in the wave,” says Richard. In addition to adding hold and doing damage control, Heat Hero imparts a beautiful, glossy shine; locks out hair-dulling pollutants; and even has a heat-activated split-end mender.
Trick #2: Keep your hands to yourself! You’ve put in the curl; released the barrel or flat iron; and now you want to start fussing with it. Don’t! Leave curls alone until they’re thoroughly cool. “Letting hair cool down in its wave or curl form before touching, brushing, or shaking it out allows the hair to set, so it lasts longer,” explains Richard.
Trick #3: Seal in a styling product

“I like adding a light mouse, like JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam, to damp hair and blow-dry this in before adding a wave or curl. You can also use a light hairspray, too, like Power Spray. These will help the curl stay intact.”

Trick #4: Keep away from the water! While dampness and humidity can actually activate naturally curly hair, water can ruin curls you put in with a heat-styling tool – especially if your hair is usually poker straight. “NEVER wet your hair once you’ve curled it, because it will fall flat quickly and you’ll lose the wave,” cautions Richard.
Trick #5: Refresh with random curlsIt’s Day Two, and half your curls have fallen, while the others are intact. Don’t start from scratch, urges Richard. “When a curl has dropped, you can bring it back to life by adding a fresh wave. This looks more natural than re-curling the entire head.” (And it saves sooo much time.)
