Featuring Joico Brand Storyteller and Blonde Specialist, Olivia Thompson
Imagine a cute, clean, trend-worthy style that stays out of the way when you’re at the beach, say, or shopping. Then, lets down its hair in seconds and rocks a night on the town with zero effort. That’s what Joico Brand Storyteller and Blonde Specialist, Olivia Thompson, has dreamed up for you….
The Sunnyside Special: Bubble braids to evening waves
You could throw your hair up in a messy topknot by day, but Olivia’s out-the-door strategy has an edge that gives it intention. “The inspiration for this look comes from the desire to create a versatile summer hairstyle that seamlessly transitions from day to night, while maintaining both style and functionality,” says Olivia, who explains that bubble braids “are not only trendy and fun, but also practical for hot summer days. They keep hair off the face and out of the way, making them perfect for daytime activities.”
But what happens when you have evening plans, and no time/desire/interest in a full-on hairstyling session before you hit the town? “As the day turns to night, the transformation into effortless summer waves reflects the ease and spontaneity of summer evenings, allowing for a relaxed yet stylish look without the need for extensive restyling,” says Olivia.

“Bubble braids are a trendy choice; and natural, beachy waves are always in vogue, especially in summer. This dual look is easy to achieve with minimal products, promoting heatless styling and hair health. Both looks capture the essence of summer with a playful, boho-chic vibe that’s perfect for any occasion.” – Olivia Thompson
Here’s your toolkit…
Power Spray Fast Dry Finishing Spray
Spray bottle of water
Detangling brush or wide-tooth comb
Mini hair elastics
A curling wand/iron (nope, not for making waves!)
Weekend Hair
The morning strategy…
Start with clean, dry hair: Apply a small amount of Power Spray and a spritz of water to add hold and shine.
Create sections: Divide your hair into two sections for pigtails or one section for a single braid.
Build your bubble braids:
Secure the first section of hair with a mini hair elastic (clear or colorful) at the crown.
Move down a couple of inches and secure another elastic.
Gently pull the hair between the elastics to create a "bubble" effect.
Repeat until you reach the ends of your hair. (If you choose pigtails, repeat on the other side.)

Now, let’s head into evening…

Use this hack to remove the elastics: Pulling them out by hand can tear strands of hair. Instead, touch them briefly with a heated iron and they’ll instantly dissolve and pop off without tugging or breakage.
Lightly mist hair with water: Use a spray bottle to dampen the hair – this will help to set the waves.
Do the scrunch-and-shake maneuver: Using your hands, gently scrunch hair to enhance waves formed by a day in bubble braids, then give hair a little shake to bump up the volume.
Lock in the look: Finish with a generous mist of Power Spray hold those waves and add a touch of shine.
Want to keep those waves going for another day?
Sleep on a silk pillowcase: This will help keep waves intact and minimize frizz.
Do a tiny morning touch-up: If needed, hit any flattened areas briefly with a curling iron; refresh roots with Weekend Hair Dry Shampoo, then do a bit more scrunching and apply a final mist of Power Spray.
