You’re in the zone. Hands flying between brushes and bowls, foils and formulas. And before you know it, you’re a millisecond away from painting bleach on a lowlight strand. Breathe. It can happen to anyone…even Joico Global Brand Storyteller, Olivia Thomson, who’s come up with some catastrophe-aversion hacks so you never veer off course again. “These little visual cues save me from mix-ups when I’m busy working with color,” she says. “It’s a foolproof system that you can share with your staff!”

Set yourself up for success with these “hair horror hacks”…

✔️ COLOR COORDINATE YOUR BOWLS AND BRUSHES
May sound like a no-brainer, but it’s actually brilliant “eye Q”: Olivia uses light-colored brushes and bowls for lightener, and dark-colored brushes and bowls for color.

✔️ LABEL YOUR FORMULAS
Working with multiple formulas and trying to keep them straight? Olivia doesn’t leave anything to chance. “I keep dry-erase markers on hand at my station, and write my formula on each color bowl. This is a surefire way to guarantee you’re always grabbing the right formula.”

✔️ KEEP KERATIN IN ITS OWN “CAGE”
Concerned those powerful keratin chemicals might mingle their way into your blonde formula because there were remnants in the bowl from your last client? Olivia makes sure it never happens by using an entirely different set of bowls, brushes, and combs for her keratin treatments. “Even though I wash my tools thoroughly after each use, there is something about this strategy that gives me extra peace of mind.”

✔️ USE SPOTLESS BOTTLES
“The other salon horror I try to avoid is when that drop of level 5 comes out on your level 10 blonde because there’s a tiny bit leftover in the toner bottle cap,” says Olivia, who has a routine that keeps things pristine: To remove all excess toner from the cap, use a tail comb and a small piece of cotton. “For the bottle itself, you can drop in a piece of cotton or pour in salt! Both will help remove the residue from the sides of the bottle,” she explains.
