June 4th: National Donut DayMay sound silly to celebrate a baked good, but the genesis of this hole-y important event was all about honoring the Salvation Army Lassies – a group of women who served donuts to soldiers during World War 1. (Fun fact: The treats were often cooked in oil inside the helmets of American infantrymen, who were referred to as “doughboys.”) Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts frequently hand out freebies on those days, so go forth and indulge!
June 8th: Best Friend’s DayWe can think of no better year than 2021 to recognize your BFF – especially if you haven’t been able to see them in person for months on end. According to experts at the Mayo Clinic, the value of friendship runs deep: Friends can increase your sense of belonging and purpose; boost happiness and reduce stress; improve your self-confidence; and help you cope with life’s down cycles and traumas. We say go get them a donut and raise a glazed toast!
June 18th: National Splurge DayNope…not more donuts. How about an indulgent day of much-needed pampering to make you feel bomb inside and out? Whether it’s scheduling a mani/pedi, taking a yoga class/long walk, or visiting your hairstylist, the benefits of self-care are real: Studies show it helps reduce stress…which is especially important on the heels of our anxiety-ridden past year. A good way to start: Apply Defy Damage Overnight Sleepover Overnight Nourishing Treatment, then settle in for some blissful ZZZ’s. Come dawn, you’ll feel refreshed and your hair will be literally transformed.
June 19th: JuneteenthAlso known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, this is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery. It’s often marked with prayer, reflection, and rejoicing. But the day is equally infused with the acknowledgement of current conditions and experiences of people of color; and a renewed commitment to work towards dignified and important changes in society. Expect to see lively parades, festivals, and -- most importantly -- families and friends of every color coming together to share food, freedom, and unity.
June 21st: First Day of Summer Even if you work straight through the summer, there’s a subconscious Woohoo! that accompanies the season – likely a throwback to those end-of-school days. But even if a formal vacation isn’t on the radar, experts say that summer great for your mind and body: Healthier eating, more water consumption, exposure to mood-boosting sunshine and vitamin D, and the regulation of sleep cycles (thanks to longer days) all contribute to a feeling of joi and wellness.
June 23rd: National Pink DayWe’re not entirely sure what prompted the calendar marking of everyone’s most fav feminine color, but we’re BIG fans of dreamy pink hair (check out Joico’s Color Intensity line, which boasts about eight different, luscious blushing shades). Also on our list: pink cookies...and pink handbags. According to whowhatwear.com, “90’s bubblegum pink is superseding delicate pastels as the dominant handbag color of 2021.” This sweet tote has almost 19K near-perfect reviews on Amazon.
June 28th: Pride DayMarked on this day, and celebrated throughout the month of June, Pride commemorates the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Manhattan, considered the turning point for gay liberation in the United States. Galvanizing people to march in “Gay Pride” and courageously shed the mask of anonymity, Pride events continue the mission with traditions that include carnivalesque parades, educational marches, rallies, festivals, and community outreach…all of which strive to foster the impact and importance of equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual individuals.
June 29th: National Camera DayThe focus here? A celebration of the almighty camera, and its significance in helping us capture, record, and commemorate the important – and not so important – moments in life. Naturally, this includes really awesome hair days…so take a selfie on National Camera Day, post it to Instagram, and tag us @joico. We’d love to see those joi-filled June ‘dos!
