The Business of Balayage has done it again. These bombs of the blonding biz — they’re an independent collective of educators with a signature teaching forum — have an uncanny ability to nail a novel fair-haired look that’s perfect from roots to end. This month? It’s a Balayage Bricklay Technique, showcased by colorist, Lindsay Ryffel with her favorite LumiShine and Blonde Life formula.

The Goal: Take this long-time client brighter, but with a similar grow-out to her regular balayage look
The Look: Faux Balayage Bricklay, a technique that gives maximum lift within a foil, while keeping Zone 1 diffused so it mimics a true Balayage design.
Then pair each section falling into the next in a bricklay pattern, to create a more dimensional blonde throughout the head. “Because you can take large sections with this technique, you’re able to create lighter looks in a shorter amount of time,” explains Lindsay.
The Thinking: I created this look in our blonding class to show students how quickly you can create beautiful transformations behind the chair without making things too complicated. Believable blonding is always something I gravitate towards.
The B of B trick: “The pop around the face is something we’ve been seeing for a while now, but I’ve said it before but I will say it again: I love the face frame to look like a sister to the rest of the head…not a twin. It should be a little more “extra”, yet belong to the rest of the head.”
The Formula:
Balayage to blonde-conversion created with Blonde Life and 20 Volume in foil painted, with our faux Balayage Bricklay Technique to maximize blonde results in a short process. “I then went back in with LumiShine 6N Permanent to shadow the roots and pulled my new favorite LumiShine 9SB Demi Permanent Liquid through the rest of her hair,” raves Lindsay.
