Golden Globe Hair How-To’s

The awards have been announced, the tears have been shed, the red carpet has been stashed for another year. Now that the hair spray has settled, it’s time for the most important Golden Globes assessment – who was best dressed and who sported the best ‘dos? Style Expert Sydne Summer of weighs in on her three best looks, while Joico International Creative Director Damien Carney talks about the hair that complimented these looks.

Naomi Watts

2014GoldenGlobes_NAOMISydne’s Best Dressed: Naomi there to support her Golden Globe-nominated hubby Liev Schriber and boy did she make a hot date! The slinky Tom Ford dress exuded sex appeal thanks to a perfect fit and sheer side cutouts. But the embellished chain neckline kept it classy with a bit of edge.

Damien’s Get the Look: Fresh and Easy This hair is effortless and minimal, yet perfectly polished. It’s a look that many women would feel comfortable wearing for a special occasion.

  • Prepare hair with Joico K-PAK Shampoo and Conditioner.
  • Apply K-PAK Smoothing Balm to damp hair and comb through for even distribution.
  • Create an “imperfect” off-center part.
  • Tip the head upside down and dry with a blow dryer and Denman brush. The idea is to control the texture without stretching out the “character.”
  • Apply a small amount of Joico K-PAK Protect and Shine Serum to the hair surface and smooth sections with a flat iron.
  • Spray fingertips with Joico Power Spray and run hands through the hair at the scalp to lift the roots and control flyaways.
  • Mist with more Power Spray for touchable hold.

Lupita Nyong’o

2014GoldenGlobes_LUPITASydne’s Best Dressed: Talk about making a memorable Golden Globes red carpet debut! The 12 Years a Slave actress was a knockout in Ralph Lauren. Like a true fashionista, she let the bold color and cape remain the main focus by keeping accessories simple.

Damien’s Get the Look: Glam With an Edge There’s a surge of celebrities who are cutting their hair and it’s very refreshing! This young actress demonstrates that short hair can be glamorous enough for the red carpet, and still maintain an edge!

  • Prepare hair with Joico Moisture Recovery Shampoo and Treatment Balm for soft, shiny, styleable texture.
  • Create the side part with a comb or a razor.
  • Allow the hair to air dry in the shorter back and side sections.
  • Dry the longer top sections with a round brush, stretching the hair to loosen the curl.
  • Smooth the top sections with a flat iron if desired.
  • Mist with Joico Humidity Blocker finishing spray.

Cate Blanchett

2014GoldenGlobes_CATESydne’s Best Dressed: Cate looks regal in everything she wears, especially Giorgio Armani. The sheer lace was the perfect blend of sweet and sultry and the high neckline highlighted her flawless bone structure.

Damien’s Get the Look: Curves Ahead These are glamorous, old school curves and the look is perfect on beautiful Cate Blanchett.

  • Prep hair with Joico K-PAK Shampoo and Reconstructor.
  • Apply K-PAK Thermal Design Foam to damp hair and comb through to distribute evenly.
  • Blow dry with a large round brush to encourage volume and a curved silhouette.
  • For additional lift, set sections on large Velcro rollers. At the hairline, direct the hair up and away from the face.
  • Once hair is completely cool, release the rollers, redefine the part and use a Mason Pearson-style brush to blend and mold the hair, forming the large s-shaped sections and rolling the ends around your hands.
  • Mist with Joico Power Spray fast-drying hairspray.
