Is it Bad to Let Hair Air-Dry?

“Protect your hair from the blow-dryer – heat is so damaging.” That advice is now hard-wired; and we use plenty of good products to safeguard our strands from the damage of thermal styling. But the same questions are being raised about letting hair dry naturally. So, what’s the deal with no heat? Is it bad to let hair air-dry, too? Today, we’re going to find out….

FACT: HAIR IS MOST FRAGILE WHEN IT’S WETBut that doesn’t mean we need to rush and hit it with the heat of a blow dryer in order to close the protective outer layer (also known as the cuticle). What it DOES mean is that we need to treat it with kid gloves when it’s in this vulnerable state.
FACT: FINGERS AND BRUSHES CAN CAUSE DAMAGE

It’s not the wet hair that’s inherently risky – it’s what we do to it while it’s vulnerable that can be a problem. Like raking fingers through it or pulling on snarly damp strands with a brush or comb that causes breakage and tangles. In addition to using a good detangler – like Luster Lock Multi-Perfector Daily Shine & Protect Spray – reaching for a special wet brush can help big-time.

FACT: AIR-DRYING CAN ACTUALLY PREVENT FRIZZ

Dry the hair with a blow-dryer (without a good heat protectant in place, like Defy Damage Protective Shield) and you risk breaking down the outer lipid layer of the cuticle. This can cause individual hairs to start to separate from each other and build that texture known as frizz.

FACT: THE WEIGHT OF WET HAIR CAN CAUSE PROBLEMSWet hair weighs more than dry hair; and all that pull on those individual strands can make them to stretch and become more vulnerable to breakage.

FACT: STRATEGIC TOWEL-DRYING HELPS…A LOTGently squeeze as much moisture out of hair as possible with a microfiber towel, rather than let it drip-dry soaking wet. If you have curly, or natural/textured hair, try the plopping technique: Turn your head upside down and gently push the towel fabric up into the curls to absorb moisture without pull.
FACT: ZERO HEAT AIR DRY CRÈME SOLVES PROBLEMSThis no-frizz wonder allows you to wash your hair and walk out the door with perfectly air-dried style without worrying that you’re wrecking your hair.
  • It’s formulated in two versions (one specifically for thick-textured hair, one for fine/medium).
  • It celebrates natural waves with 24-hour humidity protection and major shine – no stiffness or crunchiness.
  • Zero Heat contains hydrating Rosehip Oil and ingredients that deliver flexible, long-lasting hold.
  • You just work a small amount through gently towel-dried hair; scrunching to enhance texture, and allow to – yes, you guessed it — air-dry.
