COLOR-CHANGE TALKING POINTS
With Joico Celebrity Artist, Jill Buck, of Salon 901
Coloring your hair for the very first time? Taking the plunge and going for gutsy red? Finally getting up the gumption to cover your gray? Don’t make a move until you check out the latest installment of our brand-new hair series, Big Changes; because Joico Celebrity Artist, Jill Buck, of Salon 901, is revealing the communication secrets that result in a perfect transformation!
Start with an email + photos
“Emails are a must before you even sit in my chair,” says Jill, who suggests they include photos of your current hair, as well as pics of the look you’re after. “I offer what I estimate the cost will be, and then neither of us are awkward when it’s time to pay at the end.” Another benefit of some pre-planning: It gives your hairdresser the ability to tell you ahead of time if the look you’re after isn’t going to work on your hair; and time to suggest alternatives.
Bring those photos to the appointment
“Pictures are the best way to communicate. They can show you what they do like in a color, and also what you DON’T like about a look,” says Jill.

Don’t freak out if your hairdresser asks you strange questions
“It’s so important to look at the big picture when helping clients with a major change,” explains Jill, who takes her cues from all sorts of factors.
What do you do for a living?
Believe it or not, your career can sway a hair-color choice: Maybe you’re in the sun all the time and risk big color-fade problems. Or you travel constantly and don’t have much time for the maintenance of, say, platinum blonde.
How old are you?
Revealing your age can help your hairdresser understand your lifestyle, interest in trends, and even how your hair will behave after color.
What’s your financial situation like?
It may sound like a none-of-your-beeswax question; but knowing how much disposable income you have to invest in salon appointments will help your hairdresser suggest color looks that are in line with your maintenance budget.

May I look into your eyes?
Let your stylist take a gander at those irises. “Tones from eye color can be a great way to decide if hair color should be warm or cool,” explains Jill.
Really listen to their product recs
Your aftercare can make or break fresh, investment hair color. “Joico has an incredible array of products that are perfectly tailored to extend the life of your color,” says Jill. “I send products home based on your scalp as well as your color: A blonde must have the Blonde Life line. A redhead must have the Colorful anti-fade collection or K-PAK Color Therapy to maintain the new hue. And a brunette will need Color Balance Blue to neutralize brassy tones, and possibly a rich conditioner, like K-PAK Reconstructor.
