But in a good way. That’s because our hottest Hollywood colorist, Denis de Souza, took this glam actress/blogger under his wing for a day and created the signature “Sombré” look on her brunette locks, tapping a revolutionary new Joico product to seal the deal. “Instead of harsh streaks and color blocking that’s associated with last year’s Ombré, this look is about beautiful, soft, seamless color that imparts natural-looking highlights on darker hair,” he explains of Jamie’s golden glints.
Denis’s secret weapon? Joico’s new Color Balance Blue Shampoo and Conditioner, stocked with brass-busting neutralizers that instantly cancel out any unwanted warmth in brunettes, while strengthening the hair with ingredients to protect against fading. In fact, Jamie, who has a huge following on her popular style blog, whatthechung.com, actually went home with a few bottles to keep her new highlights salon-perfect for weeks to come. (18 weeks, to be exact; that’s how long this new duo keeps color in check.) Her reaction was priceless, says Denis, of his very visible client. “Jamie absolutely loved it! She felt that the Sombré highlights softened her up, giving her something effortless and natural, but still chic.”

Want to recreate the look? Denis is sharing his formula today…
On Jamie Chung, I started by foiling her natural hair with high lift color, Vero K-PAK Color High Lift Ash (HLA) and 30 Volume Veroxide for soft highlights. Then I used equal parts Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Crème B6 (Toffee) and A7 (Dark Ash Blonde) with Chrome Activator for soft lowlights. I proceeded to lighten the ends with Vero K-PAK Crème Lightener and 10 Volume Veroxide. After processing to a golden blonde I glazed the entire hair with Joico Vero K-PAK Chrome ¾ oz. CLEAR and ¼ oz V9. Finally, I shampooed and conditioned with Joico’s NEW Color Balance Blue regimen, which is perfect for brunettes like Jaime who get their hair lightened, to make sure and keep unwanted brassiness or orange tones away (or correct it if you’re starting to see it) and maintain the look at home. Gorgeous!
