Joico Celebrity Colorist George Papanikolas speaks on the stars that lead the way with to-dye-for shades this fall.
Mila Kunis: “Brown looks best when there is subtle variation, such as dark hair with soft brown and coppery highlights.”
Adriana Lima: Red hair can clash with olive skin, so follow this Victoria’s Secret model’s lead and try a warm brown instead. “Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean you have to make a drastic change to your color,” says Papanikolas. “Refresh faded color with a warm gloss, or add a few lowlights from root to mid-shaft. By not pulling the lowlight all the way to the ends, you still save a little remnant of summer.”
Blake Lively: “The right blonde depends on your natural color,” says Papanikolas. “If you are starting with dark blonde hair or lighter, golden blonde to very pale blonde will look best. If you are medium to light brown, try switching to a golden blonde. And if you are darker brown, choose a caramel or honey blonde.”
Khloe Kardashian: “I’m seeing more bold placements of color—chunkier pieces similar to Khloé’s recent look—rather than perfectly-blended pieces that could easily go unnoticed,” says Papanikolas, who created this look. “The key is to spread out the highlights and make them more random than patterned, starting with fine sections at the root and gradually taking thicker sections as you move down, with chunky sections at the ends.”
Kate Mara: Kate opts for an understated, pretty red that suits her fair skin. “Coppers and strawberry blondes look best on very fair to golden skin, while auburn and cooler reds look better on olive and golden skin,” explains Papanikolas. Keep in mind, though, that if you have a lot of red in your skin, red hair will bring that out even more.”
