Retro Hollywood glam meets the strength of the modern woman in this sexy, feminine collection by Dilek Onur-Taylor, Artistic Regional Leader for jcp salons and Joico Guest Artist. Dilek designed her looks with exaggerated texture—crimps, frothy waves and luscious, loopy curls—and as a result, the collection was selected as a finalist in the 2013 NAHA Texture category!
Dilek says that she is drawn to highly textured looks because textured hair supports her sculptural talents. “Textured hair is easier to mold,” she explains. “I can form it into any shape.” She also chose a soft, peachy pink palette for the shoot, to reflect the feminine quality of the looks.
1. Blonde Mixed Media
“I treated this as two different styles,” Dilek reveals. “One is crimped and one is disheveled curls.”
To get the look, Dilek sprayed strands with Joico Smooth Cure Thermal Spray, divided all of the hair in tiny sections and crimped each one with an ultra-fine crimping tool. She softened the crimped texture with a paddle brush, then used a 1 ½ inch curling iron to curl the back and bottom sections. She worked a small amount of Joico Matte Grip Texture Crème through all strands to provide separation and a bit of a rough edge, then separated the crimped sections from the curled sections, twisted the crimps into a knot and pinned them into place in the back of the head with two bobby pins. Dilek’s creamy blonde haircolor design punctuates the look.
2. Pillow-y Brunette Waves
To create this expansion of waves, Dilek first rough dried the hair until it was about 80 percent dry, then worked in a dollop of Joico JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam. Next she used a flat iron to curl narrow sections throughout the entire head—the flat iron produced a crisp edge to the wave shape. “Then I teased all the under-sections like crazy with Joico JoiShape Shaping and Finishing Spray,” Dilek reveals, “creating a cushion to support the smoother top sections.” Finally, she rolled and pinned some of the length of the hair to create shelf-like support. A chocolate-y glaze provided the brunette color with richness and bombshell shine.
3. Peachy and Keen
Midlength locks take flight in this aerodynamic shape. To get the look, Dilek applied Joico JoiLotion Sculpting Lotion to damp hair for a combination of hold and shine. She dried the hair and created small subsections. She curled each section, using a ¼ inch curling iron from the hairline to the crown and then switched to a 1 inch iron for the remainder of the hair. She twisted each strand as she curled. Finally, she lightly backcombed the cooled curls with her fingers for a billowy effect. To create the unique, peach champagne hue, Dilek pre-lightened strands to pale blonde, added pea-sized drops of orange and bright pink direct dyes to a rich conditioner and applied roots to ends.
