THE ART OF COLOR
Joico's Guy Tang Turns to the Tint Bowl for Inspiration and Creative Expression
October 28th, 2009
Some artists express themselves with watercolor or clay, others with notes of music or language. For Joico/ISO Advisor Guy Tang of Casablanca’s Salon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, art comes to life with scissors and haircolor. Tang’s muse beckoned recently, and the result is three collections that reflect his unique esthetic—colorful, edgy and playful. Doubling as hair designer and photographer, he captured these looks on film.
Burning Ice: Fiery reds are cooled by tones of violet and icy blonde in this unique color design. Tang used Joico Vero K-PAK Color 5RM (red mahogany) as the base color, then shot it through with streaks of Joico VeroULTRA—a unique, one-step lift and deposit formula that works in just 30 minutes—in red, copper and red mahogany. Additional prelightened slices, toned with Joico Vero K-PAK TBB (beige blonde) with 10-volume developer, completed the composition.
Silent Noise: Vibrant with calming elements, Tang created a neutral base using Joico Vero K-PAK Color 6A (light ash brown) + 20-volume developer. Then, on slices prelightened with Joico VeroLift Crème Lightener + 30-volume developer, he skillfully married tones of pearl blonde (Vero K-PAK Color TPB + 10-volume), silver blonde (TSB + 10-volume) and lavender (INV + TPB + 10-volume). The effect is one of pearls and amethyst, glittering from deep within the earth.
Sinfully Sweet III: Here, Tang continues his exploration of luxurious brunette tones. Sinfully Sweet III was inspired, he laughs, by a Snicker’s bar, and features mouthwatering hues of caramel, butterscotch and toffee in a rich chocolate base. The base color was created with 3-oz. Vero K-PAK Chrome Demi-Permanent Color G6 (light golden brown) + ½-oz. RY (really yellow.) Highlights in VeroULTRA Butterscotch + 30-volume; Toffee + 10-volume and Caramel + 20-volume complete the delectable confection.
To style each look, Tang worked with stylers from Joico’s K-PAK and Design Collection portfolios. Integral to each style was the new K-PAK Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil, which conditions as it amplifies color’s vibrancy and shine. Design Collection Gloss Wax and Flexible Shaping Spray gave him the means to shape, mold, restyle and texturize—and the tools to create multiple variations from each foundational style.
