Thanks to the efforts of Joico salons nationwide, Joico’s Beauty for A Cure in-salon initiatives, raised over $50,000 and awareness for breast cancer programs and research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Activities ranged from cut-a-thons to a celebrity-studded event at the posh Gavert Atelier Salon in Beverly Hills.

Guests at Joico’s BCA- Beverly Hills gathering, which was co-sponsored by Voli Light Vodka, included Dancing With the Stars' Winner Karina Smirnoff, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ Kyle Richards and Lisa Vanderpump, and Footloose’s Ziah Colon. All of the guests enjoyed Pink Karina Voli Light Vodka drinks, candy from the candy bar and hairstyling touch-ups courtesy of Gavert Atelier Owner Cody Kusakabe and his team. Smirnoff and Richards both revealed that the occasion resonated personally for them since both had lost close relatives—Smirnoff’s grandmother and Richards’ mother—to cancer.

Elsewhere during the month, a number of Joico salons held Beauty for a Cure fundraisers and events in their communities, including:

Revolution Style Factory/Hair Cut USA with five locations in Pennsylvania, raising $1,800 with a special salon event.

Salon JM of Waldwick, NJ, which raised more than $500 with a cut-a-thon.

Top Cuts Salon in Bethpage, NY, led by breast cancer survivor and Beauty for a Cure role model Christina Amato Smith, raised $15,000 for four Long Island Breast Cancer coalitions with a cut-a-thon, plus other BCA events, which all together totaled $34,000.

Salon Odyssey of Babylon, NY generated more than $19,000 with a series of events throughout the months of September and October.

•Various salons in and around Peninsula, CA. spearheaded by local DSC Jaki Berry, who together raised over $4,000 going to City of Hope.

Stockton, CA Salon-Pool of efforts from over 20 salons, came together under local DSC Dave Monday’s leadership in various events including Sir Gauuan’s Salon for a major Cut-A-Thon and an after-party at Arroyo Café, raising $11,400 for City of Hope.

Beauty for A Cure participants are invited to make donations to the breast cancer organizations of their choosing. This year, many chose the City of Hope, which honored Joico Senior Vice President and General Manager Sara Jones with its Spirit of Life Award in July. Jones spearheaded a year-long fund-raising campaign for City of Hope, which generated more than $1.2 million for City of Hope research and cures for cancers. City of Hope is a state-of-the-art research treatment and education center, located in Arcadia, CA and dedicated to prevention, treatment and cancer research.

Beauty for A Cure is an ongoing program, and this year, Joico updated its Beauty for a Cure website (www.joico.com/beauty-for-a-cure) in order to provide salons with ideas, tools and support for their local events, as well as a place to celebrate their activities. There they can find special Joico promotions, plus free downloadable event planners, posters, postcards, sign in sheets, pledge sheets, donation cards, auction bid sheets and more—everything necessary to hold a successful cut-a-thon, auction, etc.

“Joico is a company that cares and the beauty industry is a profession that cares,” comments Jones. “The incredible results from our Beauty for a Cure initiative prove that without a doubt. We’re proud of what Joico salons have accomplished this year and we know that this is just the beginning as Beauty for a Cure continues to grow.”
