Everyone needs a change sometimes. Even celebrities like Gina Rodriguez, whose dark, wavy mane has become a Hollywood trademark of sorts. Enter Sally Hershberger Salon colorist, Stacey Heitman, who helped Gina lighten up—literally and figuratively.
Straight off a film project in London and hungry for a transformation that wouldn’t compromise the health of her famous hair, Gina was ready to trade brunette for blonde(ish). Stacey had the answer: a two-tone look that left several inches of naturally dark roots visible, making grow-out easy and bypassing damage in the process by using gentle Joico lightener. Here’s how she did it…
1) Step one was a full head of balayage to create the first level of lightness on Gina’s naturally dark hair.
2) This beautiful honey shade was then rinsed, and hair tousled dry, in preparation for the next phrase: breaking up those balayage pieces with additional free-hand highlighting around the face in chunky, one-centimeter-to-one-inch strips. The effect brightened up the look while lending a glow to Gina’s complexion.
3) Strands were rinsed again, then toned with Joico’s demi-permanent liquid color in natural ash to tweak the warmth “just a hair.”
4) Stacey finished the color transformation with K-PAK’S new Luster Lock, a game-changing product the popular colorist refers to as “her very favorite new treatment.” “It not only helped strengthen Gina’s hair, but unlike other products, it works instantly. Gina left my chair with the fresh look she was seeking…and I happily added her to my A-List Blondes.”
