Damien Carney Gives Oscar Hair How-Tos

“Relaxed and refreshing.”  That’s how Joico International Artistic Director Damien Carney sums up the best hair sported by the stunning red carpet celebrities at this year’s Academy Awards.  “These lovely actresses show that simple hair can look beautiful with a designer gown!” Damien notes.

Here are his how-tos for his Oscar night favorites.

Jennifer Lawrence’s Textured Backsweep

OSCARS HAIR J. LAWRENCE

Damien says: “This proves that there are lots of styling options for short hair, including glamorous looks.  The volume on top and the matte texture dress up Jennifer’s ‘growing out’ pixie. She looks divine in Dior; a strapless gown elongates her neck, adding to her statuesque look and the hair punctuates this perfectly.”

Get the look:

  • Shampoo and condition with Joico K-PAK Shampoo and Conditioner.
  • Apply a generous amount of Joico K-PAK Thermal Design Foam to damp hair.
  • Beginning at the nape and working up to the crown, use a large round brush and blow-dry the hair, encouraging body and volume.
  • Direct front sections away from the face with the round brush.
  • Use a Denman style brush to smooth the sides away from the face.
  • For additional support, subdivide the top into three sections and wind each one around a large curling iron, directing the hair away from the face.
  • Emulsify a dime-sized amount of Joico Matte Grip Texture Creme, grip between fingers and work through the lengths for control and a “lived-in” texture.

Jennifer Garner’s Better-Than-Natural Texture

OSCARS HAIR JENNIFER GARNER

Damien says: “This style is casual enough to wear with jeans but polished enough for the red carpet.  It’s fresh and youthful—very relaxed and natural, and works perfectly with the fringe on this silver tiered Oscar de la Renta. Features that could have gone very wrong, but in this case were done oh so right!”

Get the look:

  • Shampoo and condition with Joico Smooth Cure Shampoo and Conditioner.
  • Allow the hair to air dry to encourage the formation of the natural texture.
  • Create a low side parting.
  • Create a horseshoe-shaped parting from each side of the hairline that extends to the crown and clip away the top.
  • Working with a large iron on the bottom, wind vertical subsections around the barrel to create an uncontrived wave shape.  Vary the size of the partings and the direction of each wave to simulate a natural wave.
  • Release the top and divide into three sections.  Use the iron to bend each subsection and direct the hair away from the face.
  • Mist hands with Joico Texture Boost Dry Spray Wax and work the formula into the hair to create movement and definition.

Viola Davis’s Soft, Modern Waves

OSCARS HAIR VIOLA

Damien says: “The way these waves lift off of the face is very flattering.  The look is glamorous and soft, informed by the past yet very up-to-date. This strapless Escada gown really says old Hollywood in a vibrant emerald green. Love it!”

Get the look:

  • Shampoo and condition with Joico K-PAK Shampoo and Conditioner.
  • Comb a pea-sized amount of Joico JoiGel Firm through damp hair.
  • Create a side part.
  • Create large deep fingerwaves in the longest sections.
  • In the shorter side and nape sections, set the hair in pincurls, directed away from the face.
  • When hair is completely dry, remove all clips and gently brush through with a Mason Pearson-style brush.
