DAMIEN'S BLOG: TOP 3 SPRING HAIR TRENDS FOR 2011

Top 3 Spring Hair Trends

  • When the season changes, it's your cue to offer your clients something new. Many will ask your opinion about hair and fashion trends, and look for suggestions about updating their hair. If they don't ask... it's up to you to start the conversation! Your client may or may not be ready for a change, but regardless, it's smart to let her know you're ready when she is.

This spring, I'm excited about several new hair trends. I invite you to use some of these trends to start your own hair transformation conversations with your clients in the salon this month!

  • Opposites Attract:

I love the approach of mixing up different lengths or textures on one head, or adding disconnection in discreet areas, but doing so in a manner that's seamless and unobtrusive. Specifically, talented A-list actress Uma Thurman portrays this look magnificently. Thurman was spotted at the Los Angeles premiere of the upcoming film Ceremony and wore her hair in a loose braid with side swept waves.

Recreating looks like these for your clients gives you the ability to truly customize haircuts to make the most of specific features. Create a shattered perimeter to open up a small face, for example, juxtaposed by a smooth, sleek interior. With all of your haircuts, I urge you to focus on structure and precision, even if the net effect is meant to appear casual and unstructured.

The Joico J-Cutting Program is a great foundation for technical excellence. If you can provide your clients with long-lasting, well-engineered haircuts that grow out beautifully, they'll truly value you... and spread the word to all of their friends!
  • Fabulous Fringes:

The power of the fringe should never be underestimated. The right fringe design can completely alter a facial shape, and help create the illusion of the ideal oval that we all strive to create. It can also punctuate a haircut with drama--consider an extremely crisp, wide, square shape or a long, sweeping, angled fringe. Short, choppy fringes can soften the severity of a short haircut.

And for the client who is reluctant to part with her long hair, a fringe is often the perfect solution for a "low-impact" update! This season, I like extreme fringes--short and notched, long and asymmetrical, square and wide. Find the right fringe for your client and you'll instantly empower her bone structure, eyes and skin.
  • Sculpted Textures:

Sexy, waved textures will be big news this season--make waves on all lengths! Experiment with the K-PAK ReconstRx VaporIron--the beveled edges allow you to create a truly modern wave shape. Several actresses sported waved bobs at the Oscars this year, including Scarlett Johansson and Marisa Tomei.

Now that the Oscars are over, it's time for this year's list of blockbusters to hit the big screens. The film Arthur, starring Russell Brand, co-stars the lovely Jennifer Garner. Garner's wavy brunette locks resemble the dos of Natalie Portman, Jennifer Lawrence and Celine Dion, who sported the wavy look on longer hair. A talented musician and actress, Beyonce is another Hollywood starlet who is well-known for her bodacious textured waves. The 16-time Grammy Award winning singer pulled off her signature look at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in February.

The key to these textures is to strike just the right balance. In other words, today's waves should be sculpted and clean, but they must not veer into the realm of rigid or stiff. Whenever you're styling hair, my rule is this: hair must always look like hair, feel like hair and move like hair. If it doesn't meet those criteria, I don't think that your style is successful.

Luckily for artists like us, Joico has some incredible products that enable us to create hair "fabrics" that are smooth and gorgeous. K-PAK Color Therapy Restorative Styling Oil is one of my favorites--it features an amazing, lightweight technology that actually becomes part of the hair, weightlessly, and allows us to smooth and control our clients' hair like never before!
