How to Take the Gloom Out of Fall

The beauty business is a "people" profession, and success depends as much on solid life skills as it does on great cutting, hair coloring and hair styling techniques. Jill Kohler, founder of the exclusive Kohler Academy in Phoenix AZ, an exclusive Joico Vero K-PAK Color partner, understands this completely. That's why she devotes a significant portion of her curriculum to coaching and inspiring students, in order to provide the high level of personal and professional development that places Kohler graduates in demand among top salons. If you're new to the profession, or if you're a salon owner or manager responsible for coaching and mentoring staff members, here are some inspirational thoughts from Jill and the Kohler Academy Team.

Follow the bouncing ball. Some days it goes to the left. Some days it goes to the right. Go with it. Learn how to solve the problems as they come. That's what coping is.

Stay out of the gray. Success is embracing the black or the white. If you have to ask yourself, for example, if the outfit you're thinking about wearing to work is right for the salon dress code, it's not. So take it off and put on the outfit you know is right. Right and wrong are white and black.

There is an expiration date for blaming your parents. The same is true for your teachers and bosses. The moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you. Don't be a victim. Own your life.

Live with purpose. It's important to decide that you're going to be hopeful, joyful and mindful. But that's not enough. Those aren't active things. Overcoming fear, building trust, moving forward - those are active things. Live your life actively, not just passively.

Strike "I can't" from your word list. At Kohler Academy, there is an illegal word list, and using any word from that list is grounds for expulsion. Profanity of any kind is included on the list, of course. So are the words "I can't."

Shine a light on problems. Ignoring conflict, negativity, miscommunication, etc. will not make them go away. Ignoring problems make them bigger. Shine a light on what's not working and bring it out in the open. Then you can resolve, recalibrate, improve. Problem solved!
