Haircolor Tips
Beth Minardi Stops the Clock
In a recent hair color class conducted by Joico Vero K-PAK Color Exclusive
Spokesperson Beth Minardi, a student raised her hand and posed the following
question: "One of my clients would like to grow out her hair color and let her hair
go gray. What's the best way to do this?"
Beth paused for several seconds, turned to the questioner with a gaze of steel and declared, "The first step is to get her a t-shirt that says, in huge letters, 'I GIVE UP!'" she declared. "Because that's what she'll be telling the world with her gray hair."
Clearly, Beth firmly believes that women will look better, and feel better about themselves, if they defy the signs of hair color aging - whether they're 25 or 65. And luckily for hair colorists, she says, the new Joico Vero K-PAK Color Age Defy collection offers the perfect solution to turn back time.
It's important to understand, says Beth, that there is more to gray hair color than simply a lack or absence of pigment. As hair whitens, she explains, the client will also notice a change in the texture of those grays - with every tick-tock of the clock, strands become more coarse, dry and wiry. What's more, the hair that has not yet begun to lose pigment begins to darken and dull, losing its youthful shine and vibrancy. "So it's not just enough to cover gray," Beth explains. "The color professional must also restore moisture, protein, lipids and warmth."
What's more, a lack of pigment can cause grays to become stubbornly resistant to color coverage. In the past, gray coverage formulas that had the "muscle" to cover resistant white strands also tended to make the hair appear dense and opaque. "So restoring shiny, bouncy, youthful-looking hair," Beth observes, "has been somewhat of a challenge."
Until now. "As a career hair colorist," says Beth, "I am amazed that I did not know about the fabulous color choices in the Vero K-PAK Color Age Defy range before now. These colors are wonderful when used alone, or they can be intermixed with other members of the Joico Vero K-PAK Color family. The professional hair colorist can create thousands of shades, from light to dark, warm to cool. Browns, reds and blondes all look gorgeous, young and ageless. My rule of thumb is the grayer the hair, the higher percentage of Age Defy you should use in the formula."
Beth reports that, in particular, the NG series has become her "go-to" for many of her gray coverage services. "These natural tones blended with gold echo the natural underlying brown or beige pigment contained in hair that has never been colored and which has not yet turned gray," she explains. "So the results are truly natural. What's more, the 'N' tones help counteract excessive brightness and hot roots when applied to gray hair."
One of the keys to success when working with Age Defy, Beth reveals, is timing.
"When processed correctly at room temperature for a full 45 minutes," she
says, "gray coverage is complete and long-lasting. The color looks fabulous
when the client leaves the salon, and it continues to look perfect for weeks and
weeks."
And beautiful color is just the beginning. Age Defy contains Joico's exclusive 3-Defense Technology which includes time-released lipids, amino acids and ceramides. This complex restores depleted moisture and proteins to dull, dry hair, leaving it soft, silky, more manageable and more youthful. So forget that gray hair and that t-shirt, says Beth. Now every woman, with the help of her stylist, can look as great as she feels. In fact, she suggests, go ahead and gift your clients with a different t-shirt - one that says, "Don"t Fight Age...Defy It!"

It's More Than Gray
