Learn this Tequila Sunrise Technique

You’re not going to want to take this gorgeous “Tequila Sunrise” technique with a grain of salt…it’s the latest brainchild of colorist Sarah Marie Smith with The Business of Balayage. Noted for their unparalled ability to nail hand-painted highlights, this famed independent collective of educators roll out one stunning look after another; and trust us, you’re going to want to put this month’s color cocktail on your order list.

FAST FACTS…

The Architect: The Business of Balayage’s Sarah Marie Smith (a.k.a. @thevividbrunette)

The Goal: Camouflage client Shelli’s grey hair in a beautiful, counterintuitive way. “She usually comes to see me every four months and we use highlighting and pinks for grey blending,” explains Sarah Marie Smith. “It works so well, I don’t know why everyone isn’t using direct dyes to blend their greys!”

The Look: “This time, she brought me a picture of a beautiful pink and coral Melt with pops of yellow. I knew immediately how we could customize it to fit her existing haircut.”

The Thinking: By mimicking her natural color placements with peach and yellow tones from Joico’s Color Intensity line, the lively pieces dance seamlessly among her grey strands.

The formula: “Tequila Sunrise”

The B of B trick: “We did a partial-head faux Balayage, then applied the main color — pink — as a whole-head color application.”
Color Intensity Shade #1: Soft Pink with a drop of Magenta
Color Intensity Shade #2: Peach with a drop of Fiery Coral
Color Intensity Shade #3: Yellow

Step 1: Do a partial-head faux Balayage using Blonde Life Powder Lightener + 20 volume.

Step 2: Apply Color 1 as a whole-head color application.

Step 3: Work #2 and #3 through, mimicking natural color placements. Use #2 as the depth and # 3 as the highlight. Focus # 1 in a crown of depth by painting lower sections with it, moving further away from hairline. Focus # 3 mostly around the face and ends, with subtle placement throughout the rest of the head.

Step 4: Process for 30 minutes, then pull the foils and work product through to make sure everything lifts evenly.

Step 5: Process for 15 minutes more before shampooing and blow-drying.
